Course Route

The marathon course route is located in the heart of Flinders Chase National Park. Runners are inspired by post-bushfire regenerating flora and fauna, undulating roads and trails, an exposed coastal section with views to the powerful Southern Ocean, a loop that travels by historic landmarks such as Cape de Couedic Lighthouse and Admirals Arch, and a new zig-zag boardwalk leading to the iconic Remarkable Rocks.

The half marathon and 10K course are traditional 'out and back' routes that travel along Cape de Couedic Road, encouraging a spirit of camaraderie amongst runners as they pass by each other in opposite directions.

The Kangaroo Island Marathon is owned by 1908 Sports Management and trades under the flagship brand Run Kangaroo Island. Our vision is to position Kangaroo Island as one of the leading adventure running destinations in the world. We are proud that our event delivers an estimated economic benefit in excess of $1M per year to the local tourism industry. 

The Kangaroo Island Marathon was founded by Race Director Nate Godfrey, and is operated in partnership with key stakeholders including the South Australian Tourism Commission and the Department of Environment & Water. The event is held in a remote location and is supported by a team of experienced paramedics from Event Medical Plus. We also work closely with local community groups including Friends of Parks who provide volunteer support on race day.  

Island History

In 1800 the British Government commissioned Captain Matthew Flinders to explore and map the southern coastline of Terra Australis in HMS Investigator. Flinders made the first recorded European sighting of the island in March 1802.
 He came ashore on the north coast and named Kangaroo Island. 

Kangaroo island is Australia’s third largest island, with a population of 4500 people and a coastline totalling 480km. The island is a bio-diverse hotspot; organic GMA free produce, rare flora and fauna, and picturesque beaches. Kangaroo Island is surrounded by five marine sanctuaries and one third of the land is designated as national parks, helping to position Kangaroo Island as a 'must see' tourist destination.
